My project allows users to access five different widgets in augmented reality.
The astronaut marker will display the date widget which will show the current date. The drone marker will display a clock widget which will show the current time.
The fissure marker will display a widget that will tell both the humidity percentage and the temperature in fahrenheit. The red thermometer will visualize the temperature and the blue thermometer will visualize the humidity.
The oxygen marker will display the wind direction and the wind speed in miles per hour. The wind direction will be visualize through an arrow and the speed will be visualized via a spinning device that spins the faster relative to the wind speed.
The final marker is the mars marker and it will display the current weather conditions. It has 9 different possible weather conditions that it can display. In addition there is a virtual button that serves for debugging or viewing all 9 individual weather conditions.
I believe that in the future widgets such as the ones that I created will be popular because they will be part of the next great leap forward in technology. Almost 40 years ago personal
computing was seen as the next great hardware in technology and it was the first step to the cultural revolution that followed. I can envision a future where AR glasses are a commodity and are
what make smartphones obsolete. The reason I believe this is because AR glasses will provide information to its user in a more interactive and immersive way. Currently phones can only provide widgets
that are simple and are not as interactive and immersive, but widgets such as the ones I built show that widgets made in AR can provide a significantly better experience. As an example one of my favorite
widgets that I built was the weather condition widget which shows a visual representation of nine different weather conditions. In addition to showing different weather models the widget also provided sound
effects which the user can hear louder as they get closer. I believe that with greater technology such as the one provided by AR glasses will be able to show these types of weather models with greater detail
and have additional models for the various more weather conditions that occur. An improvement that AR glasses can provide to this widget is that it can also warn users for potential weather disasters and provide
information about the proximity of the disaster and also provide a visual representation of the disaster in real time. Another one of my favorite widgets is the temperature and humidity widget because the visual
representation of the levels of temperature and humidity. What this widget does is it tries to simulate the mercury that rises from a thermometer therefore the hotter or the more humid it is the higher the mercury rises.
I can see this type of widget being popular because knowing the temperature of the day is a very valuable piece of information that many people need. An improvement that AR glasses can provide is the ability for the widget
to show more immersive and interactive graphs on the forecasts of the upcoming weather. This extra piece of information would make the temperature widget very effective on showing how hot or cold it is outside. These were
just some of my favorite widgets that I believe would be very popular in the future with AR glasses. However I believe there are widgets that with AR glasses could be taken to the next level. One of those widgets is the
Post-it Note widget. This widget could be used as a way for the user to keep track of different assignments, but the glasses would be able to represent them in the form of Post-it notes in their field of vision. This could
have a positive impact because the ability to simulate real Post-it notes will reduce the use of trees that are needed to make them. In conclusion AR glasses of the future will be revolutionary in not only replacing the
smartphone as the primary choice of personal technology, but also have a positive impact in keeping its users more informed about the world around them.
My project 2 contains three different sets that the user can interact with. Each of these sets have their own unique quirks that seperate them from each other.
The first set is a basic playset. The basic playset contains a desk with a model that looks like myself. This model has an animation that will be activated with a virtual button.
The animation will represent the moment where a coder is able to solve a bug and how in the state of euphoria they will begin to do a little dance.
The second set is the physics set. This set will render a 1ft by 1ft transparent plane. When the user left clicks on their mouse a cascade of balls will fall on top of the plane.
The balls will then proceed to roll off the plane simulating physics. In addition the user can also place the basic playset on top of the plane and try to drop the cascade of balls on top.
If this happens the user will see that the balls will bounce of the basic playset which has colliders that simulate a sturdy body. The user can spam constant cascade of balls and observe how the
balls inteact with the basic playset. The final set is a life size basic playset. This set will be at a life size scale where the user will be able to place it on a ground plane in their homes or any real surface.
This life size set will allow the user to view the playset in greater detail and be able to observe it at eye level which feels much more interactive.
The astronaut marker will be used for the basic playset, the drone marker will be used for the physics playset, and a ground plane will be used for the life size basic playset.
A staple of science fiction technology is the hologram. A hologram is a projection of an object using light technology that makes
it visible but not physically solid. Although hologram technology is not advanced enough to reach the heights portrayed in science fiction
media, I believe that AR technology in the future will reach the potential of science fiction holograms.
In the process of testing and creating my life size model I began to think about how a futuristic and more realistic model would
be used and portrayed with future AR technology. First I began to think about the different market niches models like mine would be used
in and what their purpose would be. One niche that I can see an AR model be used in would be to serve as a children's toy. The future will
surely bring various different types of technology and children's toys will also be innovative. AR models could be used as toys that serve
almost like dolls where children will be able to customize to their own liking. In addition I believe that AR models of the future will come
with artificial intelligence where depending on the interaction a child has with it it will be able to respond to it appropriately. Examples
of uses would be girls will be able to create their own princess model which they can play tea parties with and boys will be able to create
their action figures where they will be able to play war games with.
Another market niche I can see AR models be used in would be in fashion. While I was customizing my model and choosing the type of clothes
I wanted the model to wear I began to visualize myself wearing the clothes and thinking if it would be something that I would wear.
This made me think that in the future AR glasses will allow the user to be able to scan themselves to create an AR model in their image.
This model will then be used in a similar way to the AR furniture. The user will go to a clothing application and be able to have an option to try
on clothes on their AR model. The AR glasses will then be able to project the model and the user will be able to view it in 360 degrees where they
will be able to see if the piece of clothing would look good on them or not.
Finally a niche that I can see AR models really thrive on would be in simulation. During the creation of my playset I began to think
about how different playsets could be made that would be able to simulate different activities. This is when I began to think about how in
the future AR playsets will be able to simulate different activities with different scenarios. One scenario I can see being very popular
would be a cooking playset. For example a user that really wants to learn how to cook will be able to download a cooking playset that would
come with an AR model that would be able to teach the user how to cook a specific dish. This form of learning would be beneficial because not
everyone is able to learn through videos or books and thus the cooking playset would be able to demonstrate the user how to visually cook a
In conclusion, I believe that AR models and playsets will be utilized in different market niches in the future and will not only be used for
children entertainment. I can see a future where a child or an adult can use AR glasses and have AR playsets at their quick disposal. Where
these playsets will serve any purpose that the user wants, and will reward a gratifying and interactive user experience.
My project 3 is a VR playset where the user is able to interact with various objects of the world.
The theme of the project was to create my own special classroom that had a specific theme around it.
For my theme I decided to incorporate cartoon animals because I am a very big fan of cartoon animals as I think they give a very relax feeling to my room.
In addition for my project I was asked to add items around my desk that I would typically use in a regular school day and I picked some specific items.
The items I picked where school related because I always bring a lot of materials to school in order to be prepared. One of these items you would typically
not carry around would be a stapler. Therefore I added a stapler item close to my desk because it would be something that I would carry around.
Furtheremore I have various other school items such as a laptop and a notebook that I would always carry around because I would use them to take notes.
For the animals I chose to put fox and a duck because I thought they looked very cool and they fit the cartoon aesthetic I was trying to incorporate in my class room.
There are additional models of different animals that also populate a certain area of the room. The reason why they were placed in a concentrated area is because
I wanted to give the idea that these cartoon animals randomly appeared in class and are ready to learn with everyone else in the classroom.
Finally for my model I thought it would be a good idea to bring some dance moves to the classroom and show how I would dance if I got a correct answer during class.
For a long time the idea of being able to live in a virtual reality world was seen as just a simple concept of science fiction. However, with the exponential growth of virtual reality
technology over the past two decades we have gotten closer to seeing a glimpse of the future worlds we will be able to explore. However, it is important that we are able to understand
the sociological implications of being able to interact with virtual avatars and what it can reveal about real world relationships. For starters we can look at online communication as
a current example of anonymous interaction. The age of social media as it is often called deals with the concept of anonymity where anyone can say anything without their identity being known.
This masquerade has caused a lot of controversy as it is easy for people to spew hate at certain individuals or groups of people. It is because of this that the freedom to roam the internet freely
is a controversial topic to discuss and find a middle ground. Typically users of the internet want to be able to freely browse the web without any exterior surveillance as they think it encroaches
on their freedom. However, the government needs to be able to have the ability to track down any sort of criminal activity and prevent any sort of criminal attacks before they happen. When it comes
to the virtual reality world we can draw parallels to the issue of privacy and the ability to stop crimes. When virtual reality is much more advance individuals will be able to hide much of their actions
through the use of an avatar. Because of this like mentioned there will be problems with the idea of how truly someone should remain anonymous online. If someone in a virtual reality world commits a crime
can they persecuted? or will they be let go because of online anonymity? I believe that in the future it will be very important that a consensus is reached on what someone can and can not do under the veil
of anonymity. However, virtual reality can also bring to light the good in individuals through various different actions and activities. To draw parallel with social media again there are places where people
can donate to good causes or to help others out and remain completely anonymous. I believe that this is one of the benefits of being anonymous and allows an individual to help without having to show their true identity.
These type of helpful communities already exist in a virtual reality world. The popular game of VR Chat has several communities where people are able to interact with others and ask for advice or get help.
Although, its main premise is being a social game there are individuals who formed communities to help others such as giving religious masses or providing any type of social help. It is these interpersonal relationships
from these communities that I believe that virtual reality will come with its fair issues, but I believe the good that can come out of it will be worthwhile.
